  On my shelf I have "Comparative Vertebrate Histology" by D.I.Platt
  and G.R.Platt. New York: Harper & Row, 1969. The skin chapter 
  doesn't seem to contain the answer to your question, but there may
  well be a later edition that does. A good place to look for books
  by subject is www.amazon.com

  The 100-year index to the Journal of Anatomy (1966) is another
  good place to look for studies done long ago that aren't easy
  to find in modern textbooks.
