We found  the  Alcian blue/Safranin  method of Csaba described  in Bancroft  
and  Stevens (p639 third  edition) worked  well  on  formalin fixed  rat  lungs, 
a  very pretty  result red(heparin containing granules) and  blue (biogenic  
amines/histamine etc containing granules)
