Thanks to all that responded to my question about starch and marking techniques.  Sadly, the Prof insists that starch was the method used.  I'm not going to look much further.  We are presently testing silver nitrate, alcian blue, artists pigments suspended in acetone, indian ink and finally, poster paints mixed with gelatin.

Thanks also to the producers of commercial marking systems that have contacted me.

If I ever find the fabled 'starch method' I will be sure to let you all know.
