Helen,

The Securline marker will fade but it does stay on.  The only other
one I can think of is #2 pencil, last resort a diamond pen etched on
the BACK side of the slide at the bottom.

I always used an excel grid that I had made up indicating which slot I
had placed the slide, then using the diamond pen I would etch "1a",
"2a" etc.  The number would indicate the row, the letter the slot.

It's not a perfect system, but it worked.
