Thanks to the people below for there help both detailed and otherwise.
Why not remove coverslip with xylene, take slide to water, then wash out
eosin, do the alcian blue leaving the hematoxylin in there. They contrast
nicely.

Yes. There's no need to remove the hemalum nuclear
stain, because alcian blue attaches to things
other than nuclei and is a different colour. If
you do remove the H and E you can do a red nuclear
counterstain after alcian blue.
