Re: old-school

From:JOE NOCITO

I do.  When I was transferred to the AFIP, I didn't see a microtome for 5 years (just did immunos).  When I came back to the real world, I had to learn how to cut all oer again, something about these disposal blades. Didn't even see a strop.
Now, we have histo students rotating through the lab.  I had to show them a picture of a knife sharpener, a 180mm steel blade and old Technicon. They have a hard time believing that used to be the cutting edge of technology (no pun intended, of course).

Me too - and the old blue cover AFIP manual - I even remember page numbers!

And the black spider Technicon with the glass beakers..and the benzene...

Ah, the good old days...

Fred,
Ann Preece wrote the first Histology book I ever studied from. I'm
old school histology. I used to even sharpen knives, stain, and coverslip by
hand. Once or  twice when our one and only tissue processor went down I even
processed by hand! Yuck! What's worse is that we even tucked a piece of
typing paper with the accession # under the coverslip! Sorry I'm ranting.
Ann Preece A Manual For Histologic Technicians Third edition Little, Brown
and Co. Boston copywright 1959,1965,1972. Pg 228 has an old Mayer's
Hematoxylin formula that includes Chloral hydrate.

And Respectfully back at you, just to show my total
ignorance.

Who is/was Ann Preece?  I sure would like the original ref.
for that
alteration of Mayer's original recipe which I have in all of
my old tomes.

Even worse, I can hardly remember how to get home any more,
how can you
remember someone I never even heard of (he asked
humbly....)?
