Dear Allison,
I encountered something very similar many years ago, when I purchased some
"Cheap" slides. Get your slides from a reputable manufacturer and make sure
they are transported and stored  in "Tropical" packs. Anything ex. Clay
Adams and Menzel Glassworks are fine. (The Superfrost varieties are usually
ex. Menzel)
My slides were so bad even micro didn't want them because of the fungal
elements.
