Hi Brian,
We have a list of indications ( both maternal and fetal ) which
determine whether we process a placenta. As a general rule placentas
from uncomplicated deliveries, and where mother and baby are in good
health are not submitted for histology. In cases where the baby is
placed in the Special Care Baby Unit ( SCBU ) for precautionary reasons,
we hold the placenta for two weeks before disposing of it ( without any
histology being taken ).
It's all good fun,
Alex Brown
